BACKGROUND

Anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies are autoantibodies associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, especially Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and, less commonly, Graves’ disease. They target thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme required for thyroid hormone synthesis, and are linked to thyroid dysfunction and an increased risk of hypothyroidism (Franco, J-S. et al. 2013; Aulanni’am, A. et al. 2024).

Anti-TPO antibody testing is commonly performed using automated immunoassays such as ECLIA and CMIA (Manescu, I.B. et al. 2024). These antibodies are also used as diagnostic and predictive markers in thyroid disease (Siriwardhane, T. et al. 2019). Recombinant human anti-TPO antibodies have been described as research reagents for assay development and validation, since patient-derived antibodies are heterogeneous (Rebuffat, S.A. et al. 2010).
