ADENOVIRUS TYPE 5 HEXON PROTEIN
Adenovirus type 5 hexon protein is a major component of the adenovirus capsid. The individual hexon protein is a complex molecule of approximately 100kDa, which is comprised of a pedestal region and three loops that project away from the surface of the virion. Hexon proteins readily form trimers, and can then further self-assemble into capsomeres of 240 hexons. Hexon antigen is generated from functional Ad40 particles produced in tissue culture. The propagation methodology and harvest conditions are optimised for hexon isolation. Hexon is then further purified by dialysis and ion exchange chromatography to yield a product of high purity and low lot-to-lot variation. For handling dilute solutions of this product we recommend the use of albumin to help stabilise the protein and prevent undue loss on surfaces. Hexon protein naturally self assembles.

BACKGROUND
Human Adenoviruses (HAdV) are non-enveloped, non-segmented double stranded DNA viruses, which belong to the genus Mastadenovirus within the Adenoviridae family of viruses. Human adenoviruses commonly cause respiratory disease but some HAdV serotypes cause gastrointestinal disease, conjunctivitis and cystitis. The clinical disease caused by HAdV infection varies depending on the HAdV type. In immunocompromised patients, HAdV infection can cause severe clinical symptoms that may lead to respiratory failure, neurological disease and death (CDC).
